Why I Use Flat Diapers

When I found out I was pregnant the first thing I worried about, oddly enough, was what diapering system to use. I knew that having a baby could be very expensive, but I also knew that it didn’t need to be. After all, babies existed way before money did.

I knew I did not want to use disposable diapers, which for many reasons seemed irresponsibly wasteful. However, the world of cloth diapers was very complicated. There were so many styles to choose from, so many brands, so many terms to learn, and the set-up cost was significant. I needed to get it right the first time.

I briefly considered getting a diaper service. However, I live in an apartment building. I wasn’t comfortable with leaving a bin of diapers by the front door for pick-up and delivery. Also, I use a coin laundry, so I was ill equipped to run the extra rinse cycles required of many diaper styles. After weeks of research I ran across this solution and knew I had found my match “birth to potty training for under $240”.

I have never had a problem with buildup and have never needed to strip the diapers. They clean beautifully in my building’s very primative coin laundry and dry quickly on a drying rack or in the machine.

I have never experienced a “diaper explosion” although mothers who use disposables often complain about that. I think the Thirsties Wraps have a superior leg gusset because nothing gets out.

Although you can learn all kinds of fancy folds for your flat, you can also just fold them in a rectangle and lay them in the cover. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
